Alex Fthenakis is a multi-disciplined theatre maker from California, whose career now spreads all the way from the Golden State to the United Kingdom.
Originally a Californian, Alex’s professional career began when he traveled to perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2008. It was supposed to be an eight-week trip, but during the performance run he cancelled his return flight and has been in Scotland ever since. (That’s the short, romantic version of the story – for the full details you’ll have to wait ‘til Alex turns it into a solo show)
Alex trained as an actor at RSAMD (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) and currently resides in Glasgow where he works as a performer, producer, and theatre maker with a focus on international co-production in Shakespeare and Scottish New Writing. In 2014 the Arts Council of England endorsed him as an artist of Exceptional Promise for his work.
Over the last few years Alex has worked in relevant capacities across his fields of expertise with The National Theatre of Scotland, The Citizens’ Theatre, The Tron Theatre, The Arches, The Traverse, The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Bard In The Botanics, Muse of Fire Theatre Company, Washington and Lee University, Lewis and Clark College, and Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, among many others. He also co-created and currently runs the multi-award winning Pepperdine Scotland exchange.
